It was a nice day for a white wedding.

Billie was considered to be one of Charlotte’s great beauties in the 50s. One of her claims to fame was winning a Cherry Pie Baking Competition – even though she had forgotten the cherries! The fact that the judges were all young men may have had something to do with that decision.

Arthur was one of Charlotte’s most eligible bachelors. A graduate of Bob Jones University and NC-Chapel Hill, the young pastor had a bright and promising future. He was also a hopeless romantic, and fell hard and fast for the dark haired beauty.

Both of them too young to realize that beautiful bawdy butterflies do not make the best preachers’ wives.

Butterflies always do what butterflies do best – look beautiful and then fly away.

See the spot on the photo that looks like a tear?

That’s where my mother reached in and ripped out my father’s heart.
